A Church With a Mission

St. John Lutheran Church was organized in 1958 as a mission church to Champion and its surrounding communities. On March 2, 1958 a meeting was held in the American Legion Hall and the name of St. John (The Evangelist) was chosen. On March 23, 1958, the first church service was celebrated at Central Elementary School located across the street from our present day facility.

Groundbreaking for the present building took place on October 16, 1960 and the corner stone was set and our first worship celebrated on Sunday, May 7, 1961. There were 85 charter members, many of whom were from St. Paul Lutheran in Warren.

Over the next 30 years the membership of St. John grew not only in numbers, but in spiritual vitality as well. Many foundations were laid as to the ministries being offered to the surrounding community.

We saw a total transformation of our worship space which was re-dedicated to the glory of God on Sunday, February 9, 2003.

St. John Lutheran Church continues to be a vital place for the residents of Champion and outlying areas where they can come and enjoy a place of peace, love, and friendship. For many years, the congregation of St. John has been known in the area as "those friendly people."

We extend an invitation for all to "Come and See."
